How we research homeowners insurance

Data sources, editorial standards, and update dates.

This page describes how Affordable Home Insurance builds and maintains its homeowners guides, and which public sources stand behind the numbers you see.

Where the numbers come from

  • Homeowners premiums: National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Dwelling Fire, Homeowners Owner-Occupied, and Homeowners Tenant and Condominium/Cooperative Unit Owner’s Insurance Report: Data for 2023 (Table 4, HO-3 column). We publish HO-3 averages as reported, including the coverage-amount bands.
  • Local housing: American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024 (U.S. Census Bureau tables B25003, B25077, B25035, B25024, B25064), accessed through Census Reporter. City guides use owner-occupancy, median home value, median year built, and housing type.
  • City selection: Census Bureau Vintage 2024 city population estimates.
  • Natural hazards: FEMA's National Risk Index and NOAA storm records, summarized as state-level themes.
  • State oversight: each state insurance regulator, linked from its state page.

Editorial approach

Explanations follow the standard homeowners policy forms used across the industry. Insurers revise those forms, so we describe typical coverage and encourage readers to check their own declarations page and policy. We never estimate or invent a statistic; if a dependable public figure is missing for a city, the page omits it.

Full city guides

Detailed city guides cover each state's most populous communities where Census estimates are dependable. Every other community appears on its state page, and quote requests are accepted statewide.

Review schedule

We recheck figures when the NAIC and Census Bureau publish new data. Last full review: October 15, 2026. Spot something wrong? Tell us in the comments field of the quote form.
